DON’T go for it!

Abimelech brought nothing but murder, intrigue, warfare, and ultimately destruction on the city of Shechem – and died himself in the chaos he caused.

Abimelech was a man full of anger and rebellion, both against God’s authority and against his place in life.  He had no right to leadership in Israel.  But when he invited the people of Shechem to make him king, they quickly got behind him.  After all, he offered them their dream of independence from the rest of Israel.  God sent the prophet Jotham to warn them not to make this critical mistake, but they ignored him.  So God gave the people of Shechem exactly what they asked for – which included years of murder, intrigue, and ultimately a bloody war to extinction.  Shechem himself died in the chaos he caused.

What went wrong here?  Pastor Jason tells us that the base issue was one of pride and selfishness.  Abimelech wanted what did not belong to him.  The people of Shechem wanted what they were not supposed to have.  The world tells us to “go for it!” and to chase our dreams.  But as Pastor Jason warns us, if God has something for us but we demand another thing, God may grant our wishes – and we may pay dearly for them.
