Here we open the Mission archives and present materials from our early days. Calvary Evangelistic Mission was started in 1953 by Dr. Donald and Ruth Luttrell. Don was a man with a huge ambition and energy. Whether it was a set of Bible lessons, a missionary airplane service, an engineering training program, an evangelistic campaign in the Caribbean, or a radio station like WIVV, he pushed CEM into new fields of ministry. Don also was influential in the world of Christian ministry and missionary work of his day. Here you will find photos and new stories of famous people like Billy Graham, Dr. Jay Vernon McGee, government officials, and many others who found their way to WIVV or participated in one of Dr. Luttrell’s evangelistic campaigns. Dr. Luttrell, along with Ruth, was a founding member of the National Religious Broadcasters. Their influence was felt not only in Puerto Rico, but also in the United States and beyond.
Fascinating history, news of the day
Since Vieques is a small island, the big stories of the day inevitably made their way into the newsletters. These materials present first-hand historical observation from Vieques during a time when the U.S. Navy had a base and Puerto Rico was a very different place.
As these PDF’s are in super-high quality, it is best to download them rather than to view them in your browser (they may look blurry in your browser).
Don and Ruth’s published material
Calvary Evangelistic Mission had a small publishing arm, which used a small offset printer to make and distribute Christian materials.
Dr. Donald Luttrell – Home Visitation Training (This is a slightly edited version of his work published just after his passing.)
Dr. Donald and Ruth Luttrell – God’s Great Commission . . . and You! This booklet, the fruit of many years of missionary service in many Caribbean islands, has been used all over the world to help train ministry and lay leaders. Co-written by Dr. Donald and Ruth Luttrell. This PDF is scanned from the original book and is collated to be printed.
CEM – 40 Years and Beyond – Publication that details the history of CEM. This is meant to be printed as a brochure, so the pages are collated for printing.
Hurray for Teamwork! – An amusing essay by Ruth Luttrell with a fun anecdote about missionary life at WIVV.
Funeral service for Dr. Don Luttrell, CEM Founder – CEM Founder, the Dr. Donald D. Luttrell, passed away on May 22, 1987. This recording of his funeral service on May 27 of the same year contains fascinating eulogies from a variety of family, friends, and others who knew Don well. Here you will hear many stories about the early days at CEM, and find out how Don influenced many pastors to enter the ministry, helped to spur the introduction of Christian radio to Puerto Rico (stations such as Radio Redentor owe much to Don), and even influenced politicians in positions of leadership for Christ. There is a wealth of historical interest here for anyone who wants to know more about CEM and the Caribbean of the period.
Janet Luttrell shares her memories about CEM’s founding – Janet Luttrell, daughter of Don and Ruth, shares her memories about the early days at WIVV and CEM in this special Update program celebrating the ministry’s 59th anniversary.
How WCGB happened – We chat with WCGB founder and now Chief Network Engineer Lawrence Trumbower about the challenges and triumphs of putting WCGB (Radio Iniciativa) on the air in the south of Puerto Rico back on Thanksgiving 1967.

This daily program was very popular and included news of the day, birthday announcements, and Sonia’s famous “Thought of the Day.” (We don’t know the year this aired, but it was the April 1 program.)
WIVV Bulletin Board Program 2 – Les Sowiak and Sonia Davis hosted this fun program from the very old archives of CEM. This daily program was very popular and included news of the day, birthday announcements, and Sonia’s famous “Thought of the Day.” (This most likely aired Saturday, August 8, 1998.)

WCGB – Joined The Rock in 2004
When WCGB joined The Rock in 2004, the following materials were put into a special photo album that was presented to the staff of CEM. This material was prepared by Barbara Trumbower, wife of WCGB founder Lawrence Trumbower. Note: these files are very large, so give them time to download.
